Chris Hampton Named a Finalist for the 2022 FootballScoop Defensive Coordinator of the Year Award
Dec 31, 2022 | Football
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Tulane defensive coordinator Chris Hampton was recently named as one of the finalists for the 2022 FootballScoop Defensive Coordinator of the Year Award.
The other candidates for the Defensive Coordinator of the Year Award this year by FootballScoop are Jesse Minter (Michigan), Will Muschamp/Glenn Schumann (Georgia), Phil Parker (Iowa) and Ryan Walters (Illinois).
The FootballScoop Awards are the only coaching awards program where winners are selected by their fellow coaches. The FootballScoop Coach of the Year program celebrates its 15th season this fall. Coaches must be nominated by a fellow coach to be eligible for the award, and each category's winner is selected by prior winners of that category.
The FootballScoop Coach of the Year program honors excellence in performance and character at every on-the-field position and key off-the-field posts in FBS, as well as coordinators at the FCS, Division II, Division III and NAIA levels. The winner of each of the individual Coach of the Year categories will be announced in the coming days and weeks and honored at the AFCA Convention in Charlotte next month.
Coach Hampton has played a key role in leading the Green Wave defense that aided the program to an 11-2 overall record and ranked among the top units in the conference. Tulane currently ranks in the top-five in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) in third down defense (1st – 34 percent), first down defense (5th – 246), passes intercepted (2nd – 11), passing yards allowed (2nd – 188.5), red zone defense (5th – 83.3), scoring defense (2nd – 20.5), total defense (3rd – 342.4) and turnover margin (1st – 20).
Seven of the players he coached earned All-AAC honors in 2022 in cornerback Jarius Monroe (First Team), safety Macon Clark (First Team), linebacker Dorian Williams (First Team), defensive lineman Patrick Jenkins (Second Team), joker Darius Hodges (Second Team), linebacker Nick Anderson (Second Team) and safety Larry Brooks (Honorable Mention). The same seven players also were named to Phil Steele's American Athletic All-Conference Team as Williams, Monroe and Clark were all First Team selections, Jenkins and Anderson were selected to the Second Team and Hodges and Brooks were Third Team Choices.
Hampton and the team have had a truly historic and magical 2022 season. The program defeated then No. 22 CFP ranked UCF on Dec. 3 by a 45-28 score to capture the school's first-ever American Athletic Conference (AAC) title and earn Tulane its first appearance in a major bowl game since 1940 with the trip to Arlington, Texas to play in the 87th Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic against USC. The school's last appearance in a major bowl game was the Sugar Bowl. The win over UCF was the second straight win over a fellow ranked opponent. His defense had the Most Outstanding Defensive Player (Nick Anderson) of the AAC Championship game. Tulane's first nationally ranking this year, 11 weeks ago, was a first for the program since 1998. The program also received its first-ever College Football Playoff Ranking this year and are currently placed 16th nationally in that metric. Tulane's AAC regular season title earned with the victory over Cincinnati on Nov. 25 was only the third in the history of the program and was the first since the Conference USA Championship title in 1998. The win over the Bearcats ended their then 32-game home winning streak.
