Williams Named to Butkus Award Watch List
Jul 25, 2022 | Football
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane linebacker Dorian Williams was named to the 2022 Butkus Award Watch List on Monday. The honor is given annually to the nation's top linebacker.
The watch list features 51 linebackers, mirroring the legendary "51" pro jersey associated with the award's namesake, Dick Butkus, who was recognized by NFL Films as the best defensive player in football history. The Butkus Award is focused on recognizing linebackers who consistently play off the ball on their feet in a two-point stance in traditional form.
The award semifinalists are expected to be named October 31 with finalists to follow November 21. The winner will be named on or before December 7. Appearing on the watch list is not a requirement to win the award.
All 2022 Butkus Award winners will be honored at a televised event on January 21, 2023, at the Agua Caliente Resort Casino Spa in Rancho Mirage, California. CBS Sports Network aired the event last season, featuring Butkus and numerous noted NFL Alumni.
Tulane's Williams made 73 tackles in 2021, the team's second-highest total. For his efforts, he was named a third team All-American Athletic Conference selection at season's end. He also posted two tackles for loss and a fumble recovery. Last month, he was a first team all-league pick by Steele.
