Tulane Goes 1-1 to Open C-USA Championship

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Tulane University Beach Volleyball went 1-1 on the opening day of the Conference USA 2023 Beach Volleyball Championship Thursday at the Fort Lauderdale Beach Park. As the No. 3 seed in the tournament, the Green Wave defeated the six seed Jacksonville State 5-0 to start the day before dropping a hard-fought second match 1-4 to the two seed Florida Atlantic.

Tulane rolled in its first-round matchup against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks. At flight four, the senior duo of Abby Jackson and Ashton Mares put the Wave on the board quickly with a two-set victory. Mollie Ebertin and Kendall Peters follow right behind with a two-set win of their own at flight one to put Tulane up 2-0. The match against Jacksonville State was clinched by Lara Torruella and Savka Popovic at flight five in straight sets. Tulane won in two sets at flights two and three to complete the sweep of the Gamecocks 5-0.

In the second match of the day the Green Wave squared off with the two seed in the tournament the FAU Owls. After FAU claimed the early advantage with two-set wins at flights one and two, Tulane responded at flight three, four, and five to force a third and decisive set on each court. Jackson and Mares put the Wave on the board against the Owls by taking their third set 15-8 to pull the overall score to 2-1 in favor of FAU. Tulane continued to battle in the third set at flights three and five, but unfortunately was unable to claim those courts ultimately falling 1-4 in the dual.

Up next, the Green Wave face the five seed UTEP in an elimination game Friday at 9:30 a.m. CT. With a win Tulane will advance to play the winner of Florida International and Jacksonville State at 12:30 p.m. CT.
