TOURNAMENT DRAW
HOUSTON – Tulane's Leigh Van Zyl notched a singles win on Friday in the consolation bracket of the American Athletic Conference Fall Championships in Houston.
The Paarl, South Africa native won 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (5) over Emily Meyer of Memphis. She will now face Kristina Kurdyavtseva of Wichita State at 9 a.m. in the semifinal backdraw.
Teammate Micah Pierce is out of the singles action after she was defeated 6-2, 6-1 by Stanislava Shulzhenko of North Texas on Friday afternoon.
Tulane's duo also fell in the doubles competition as the bracket's top seeds, Florida Atlantic's Mille-Mae Matthews and Malwina Rowinska downed the Green Wave 8-4.
The American Individual Championships is being conducted for the first time in 2024 as the conference determines men's and women's champions in singles and doubles. The singles and doubles champions will represent the American Athletic Conference at the ITA Conference Masters Championships November 7-10 in Rome, Georgia.
Two singles players and one doubles tandem from each of the American Athletic Conference's 11 men's teams and 13 women's teams will compete for the individual titles.
