
Swimming & Diving Starts Off Strong on the Opening Day of the Magnus Cup

Day 1 Results
CLEVELAND – The Tulane swimming and diving team had a noteworthy opening day at the Magnus Cup on Thursday at the Busbey Natatorium. The program totaled eight top three finishes, a pair of event victories, three school records, seven top-10 school marks, 13 lifetime bests, 10 season bests, a pool record, six NIC Bonus cuts, a NIC Automatic, a 18U US Open Qualifier, a US Open Qualifier and an NCAA B cut. Tulane ended the first day also in second place overall in the team standings with 343 points.
Catherine Russo set the school, meet and pool record twice on the day in the 50 free. She started her day by winning the preliminaries in the morning with a then record time of 22.43. She then broke again the school, meet and pool record with a 22.29 in winning the 50 free. Her time is also an NIC automatic qualifier, a US Open Qualifier and an NCAA B cut. Maya Wilson earned fourth in the event with a 22.69. Her time ranks her second all-time at Tulane in the event.
"Great energy all around as our athletes wrap up the first day of competition," said Head Coach Amanda Caldwell. "With personal bests and incredible performances, the team showed true grit and made it an exciting and unforgettable meet. Especially our school record breaking 200 free relay, 400 medley relay and Catherine lowering her own record in the 50 free in addition to twice in one day breaking the pool and meet records at Busbey Natatorium."
The 200 free relay team of Lise Coetzee, Olcaytu Hatipoglu, Russo and Wilson set a new school in the 200 free with a 1:31.58.
The 400 relay team of Andrea Zeebe, Gwen Shahboz, Russo and Wilson were the runner-up in their event with a 3:37.67. The mark also was a new school record.
Coetzee won the 500 free with a 4:49.50. The mark was also a new meet record in the event, an 18U US Open Qualifier, an NIC Bonus cut and ranks her fifth all-time at Tulane in the event. Her teammate Rafaela Sumida also finished on the podium in the event in placing third with 4:51.40. The time also was an NIC Bonus cut and places her eighth all-time at Tulane.
Paula Gaya Bisquerra placed third in the 200 breast (28.96). The mark also was an NIC Bonus cut
Shahboz took second in the 200 IM with a 2:00.70. The time also was an NIC Bonus cut and ranks her third all-time at Tulane.. Andrea Zeebe earned fifth in the 200 IM with an NIC Bonus cut of 2:01.83. The mark places her seventh all-time at Tulane.
Paige McKenzie also had a podium finish in placing third in the 3-meter dive with 265.40 pts. Het point total ranks her eighth at Tulane in the event.
Emma Brady also achieved an NIC Bonus cut with her time of 29.33 in the 50 breast.
