Incoming Track & Field Recruit Tharushi Karunarathna Competing at 2024 Paris Olympics
Jul 19, 2024 | Track & Field
New Orleans – The Tulane track & field program's incoming recruit Tharushi Karunarathna qualified and will compete at next week's 2024 Paris Olympics Games. The games officially go from July 26 – August 11 and will be broadcasted on NBC's family of networks (NBC, Telemundo, USA Network, CNBC, Golf Channel and E!) plus livestreamed throughout on the Peacock Network.
Karunarathna will represent her home country of Sri Lanka at the games in the 800m. The women's 800m begins with the first round on August 2 at 12:45 p.m. CT at Stade de France.
New this year is the repechage round, which is set for August 3 at 4:10 a.m. CT. In the repechage format, athletes who do not qualify by place in round one heats, will have a second chance to qualify for the semi-finals by participating in repechage heats. This will replace the former system of athletes advancing through fastest times (q) in addition to the top placings in the first round heats (Q). These events will now have four rounds – round one, repechage round, semifinals and the final, with schedules varying according to the specific nature of the event. The new format means that every athlete competing in the events with a repechage round will have at least two races at the Olympic Games.
The semifinals of the 800m begins on August 4 at 1:40 p.m. CT while the finals of the event are on August 5 at 2:45 p.m. CT.
Karunarathna will be one of three Tulane current athletes/coaches at the games this year as women's basketball will be represented by Assistant Coach Rena Wakama. Wakama is the head coach of the Nigeria Women's Basketball Team, also known as the D'Tigress. Also representing Tulane at the games will be sailing's Thad Lettsome. Lettsome is competing for the British Virgin Islands.
