Football’s Patrick Jenkins Honored With Selections to Bronko Nagurski and the Outland Trophy Watch Lists

Dallas, Texas – Tulane senior defensive lineman Patrick Jenkins picked up a pair of preseason awards on Tuesday as he was named to the 2024 Outland Trophy and the 2024 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch Lists.
Jenkins played and started all 14 games on the defensive line for Tulane in 2023. He totaled 35 tackles, a team-leading 11.5 stops for loss and 5.5 sacks. He was a First Team All-AAC by the conference.
The Outland Trophy recognizes 75 returning standout interior linemen representing all 10 Division 1 FBS conferences and independents. The conference breakdown is SEC 18, Big Ten 13, nine from the ACC and Big 12, seven from the Mountain West, five from the American, four from Conference USA, three from Mid-American and Sun Belt, two from the Pac-12 and Independents.
The recipient of the 2024 Outland Trophy, the award's 79th anniversary, will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards, live on ESPN on December 12. The official presentation to the winner will be made at the Outland Trophy Awards Dinner sponsored by Werner Enterprises and produced by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee in Omaha, Neb., on Jan. 22, 2024.
The FWAA will announce the Outland Trophy semifinalists on Nov. 20, and those players will then be paired down to three finalists on Nov. 26. The Outland Trophy winner is chosen from those finalists who will be part of the annual FWAA All-America Team. The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the entire membership, selects a 26-man first team and eventually the three Outland finalists, Committee members, then by individual ballot, select the winner. Only interior linemen on offense or defense are eligible for the award; ends are not eligible.
Players may be added or removed from the watch list during the course of the season. For the second consecutive season, the FWAA will announce an Outland Trophy National Player of the Week each Tuesday this season. If not already on the watch list, each week's honored player will be added at that time.
The Outland Trophy, celebrating 79 years since its founding, is the third-oldest major college football award. Created in 1946 when Dr. John Outland presented the FWAA with a financial contribution to initiate the award, the Outland Trophy has been given to the best interior lineman in college football ever since. Dr. Outland, an All-American at the University of Pennsylvania in the late 1890s, eventually took up practice in Kansas City, Mo. An avid outdoorsman, Dr. Outland believed linemen did not get the credit they deserved and wanted an award to recognize them.
The Outland Trophy is a member of the National College Football Awards Association. Founded in 1997, the NCFAA includes college football's most prestigious awards and its 25 awards have honored more than 900 recipients dating back to 1935. This season, 12 NCFAA awards will honor national players of the week each Tuesday
Jenkins was also recognized on Tuesday by the FWAA with a spot on 2024 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List. In total 75 defensive standouts from 56 schools in nine Division I FBS conferences plus Independents as contenders from the national defensive player of the year.

Bronislaw "Bronko" Nagurski is a charter member of both the College Football and Pro Football Halls of Fame.
Tulane's football team was recently chosen for third in the AAC Preseason Media Poll with 362 points plus two first-place votes.
This season, Tulane brings back three of the team's five starters on the offensive line (Shadre Hurst, Josh Remetich, Rashad Green), the leading rusher in the conference (Makhi Hughes), two of the team's top four receivers (Alex Bauman, Yulkeith Brown), the team's punter (Will Karoll) and long snapper (Ethan Hudak), the team's top three tacklers (Jesus Machado, Tyler Grubbs and Bailey Despanie) and three of the six leading defensive players in tackles for loss (Jenkins, Grubbs and Kameron Hamilton).
Tulane finished the 2023 season with a mark of 11-3 and a perfect 8-0 record in the American Athletic Conference. The program concluded the campaign with the 16th bowl appearance at the GoBowling Military Bowl contest against Virginia Tech. It was the fifth time in the last six years that Tulane has appeared in a bowl game. The team is 23-5 over the last two seasons.
The school announced the hiring of Jon Sumrall as the 42nd head coach of the team on December 8, 2023. The Huntsville, Alabama native was one of the most successful head coaches in the country the last two seasons. He guided Troy University to a 23-4 record, two Sun Belt Conference championships and a pair of double-digit winning streaks. He was named Sun Belt Conference Coach of Year and was twice named a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year honor. Sumrall returns to Tulane after serving as the Green Wave's Co-Defensive Coordinator for three years (2012-14). In 2013, he was a crucial part of Tulane's run to the New Orleans Bowl, the program's first postseason appearance since 2002 and third since 1988. Sumrall also was named a finalist for FootballScoop Defensive Line Coach of the Year.
Tulane's football team will start the 2024 season on Thursday, August 29, with a home contest against Southeastern Louisiana at Yulman Stadium at 7 p.m. The program has home games against Kansas State (September 7), South Florida (September 28), Rice (October 19), Temple (November 9) and Memphis (November 28). The road games for the 2024 season include trips to Oklahoma (September 14), Louisiana (September 21), UAB (October 5), North Texas (October 26), Charlotte (October 31) and Navy (November 16).
