
No. 24 Football Earns 37-13 Road Victory Over Temple

PHILADEPHIA– The No. 24 Tulane football team (9-2, 6-1 American) earned a resounding 37-13 road victory over Temple (5-6, 3-4 American) on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 22, at Lincoln Financial Field.
Tulane scored first as Shazz Preston hauled in a 69-yard pass from Jake Retzlaff on the team's second offensive play of the game at the 12:33 mark of the first quarter.
The Green Wave made it a two-score game as Patrick Durkin knocked in a 50-yard field goal to increase the lead to 10-0 at the 4:30 mark of the first quarter.
The Owls drew to within three, 10-7, on the three-yard touchdown pass to Peter Clark with 27 seconds left in the opening quarter.
The Green Wave again extended the lead to two scores on Retzlaff's two-yard rushing touchdown, 17-7, at the 6:36 mark of the second quarter.
Tulane added on the team's second field goal of the half as Durkin connected from 36 yards out with 21 seconds remaining before the break.
Durkin made it a hat trick with his third field goal of the game to start the third quarter and increased the Tulane advantage to 23-7 at the 9:05 mark.
Durkin knocked in his fourth field goal of the game, this one from 42 yards out, to put the Green Wave up 26-7 with 53 seconds left in the third.
The Owls drew to within two scores, 26-13, on a two-yard touchdown reception from Colin Chase at the 12:56 mark of the fourth after the failed two-point attempt.
The Green Wave quickly answered as Retzlaff connected with Justyn Reid on a four-yard pitch-and-catch that increased the lead to 34-12 after the successful two-point passing conversion to Anthony Brown-Stephens with just under 10 minutes left.
Durkin made his fifth field goal of the game as he knocked in a career-long 52-yard attempt with 6:33 left for the contest's final margin. The five field goals tied the school record. His 52-yard make was the longest for the program since Brad Palazzo's in 1997.
Next, Tulane returns home to Yulman Stadium to face off against Charlotte on Saturday, Nov. 29 at 6:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
Offense: Jake Retzlaff went 21-for-28 for 231 yards with two touchdown passes and a touchdown run. Jamauri McClure led the team in rushing with 122 yards on 17 carries plus a touchdown. Shazz Preston led the receiving corps with five catches for 96 yards and a touchdown. Zycarl Lewis Jr. picked up a pair of receptions for 39 yards. Omari Hayes had three catches for 29 yards. Justyn Reid hauled in two passes for five yards and a touchdown.
Defense: Chris Rodgers led the defense with eight tackles. Jordan Norman had three tackles including a pair of sacks. Sam Howard had a pair of tackles for loss including a sack. Kameron Hamilton picked up a sack. Javion White recovered a fumble that he nearly returned for a 37-yard touchdown to end the first half.
Special Teams: Patrick Durkin made five field goals including a pair of 50+ attempts to lead the special teams unit. TJ Smith returned a pair of kicks for 81 yards with a long of 62. Alec Clark punted three times with an average of 50.3 yards per kick plus had two downed inside the 20.
Team: Tulane outgained the Owls 406-204 including a 175-20 advantage in rushing yards. The Green Wave also had 22 first downs to 14 for Temple. The offense also controlled the ball for 34:21 in the game. The Tulane defense forced a turnover, had four sacks and six tackles for loss in the contest. The turnover forced was only the third time that Temple has turned the ball over all season.
- The five made field goals from Patrick Durkin are his 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th of the season to move him to into a tie for fourth in a single season at Tulane along with Seth Marler (2022).
- His five made field goals was a new season high for field goals in a game and tied the school record most recently set by Cairo Santos against East Carolina in 2013.
- Durkin's 50-yard field goal in the first half tied his career high and was tied for the 18th longest in school history along with Ross Thevenot vs. UAB (2008), Brad Palazzo vs. Louisiana (1997) and Seth Marler vs. Cincinnati (2002).
- Durkin's 52-yard field goal in the fourth quarter is tied for the 10th longest in school history and was last done by Tulane kicker Brad Palazzo against East Carolina in 1997.
- Jamauri McClure's 122 yards rushing were a career-high and the first time a Tulane running back has top 100 yards on the ground this season.
- Jake Retzlaff had both at least one rushing touchdown and one passing touchdown in a single game for the seventh time this season.
- With a rushing touchdown, Jake Retzlaff has now run for 12 scores this season…His 12 rushing touchdowns ties the school record for a Tulane quarterback along with Justin McMillan's 12 in 2019… His 12 rushing touchdown are tied for the fifth-most in school history…Overall, Retzlaff is just the seventh different Tulane player to rush for 12 or more touchdowns in a season along with Matt Forte (2007 – 23), Tyjae Spears (2022 – 19), Makhi Hughes (2024 – 15), Orleans Darkwa (2011 – 13, 2013 – 12), Justin McMillian (2019 – 12) and Dontrell Hillard (2017 – 12)

- The win evened Tulane's all-time record to 4-4 all-time against Temple…The Green Wave have now won the team's last three games against the Owls…This was the program's first-ever road win against Temple in Philadelphia
- The win improved Tulane to 9-2 or better for the fourth time the last four years and the ninth time in school history (2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 1998,1979, 1973, 1934, and 1931)…Overall this was the 11th time the program has ever won nine or more games in a single season although it is the fourth straight year (2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 1998, 1979, 1973, 1948, 1934, 1931, and 1925).
- The victory makes Tulane 6-1 or better in conference play for the fifth time in school history (2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, and 1934)…This is only the sixth time the school has won six or more conference games between the time in the American, CUSA and SEC.
- With the win, Tulane has won 23 of the team's last 25 regular season conference games (6-1 in 2025, 7-1 in 2024, 8-0 in 2023 and last two conference games in 2022).
- Tulane improves to 28-3 in conference regular season play since 2022. The .903 percentage is the second best in the country in that period of time.

- Head Coach Jon Sumrall is now 28-4 (.875) over the course of his four-year head coaching career in games played in the months of October, November or December.
- Coach Sumrall saw his all-time record rise to 41-11 (.788) with the win over the Owls…His .788 career winning percentage ranks him fifth among current FBS coaches with 50 games coached only behind Ohio State's Ryan Day (81-10, .890), Oregon's Dan Lanning (44-7, .863), Georgia's Kirby Smart (115-20, .851), and Indiana's Curt Cignetti (141-37, .792).
- The win improved Coach Sumrall to 16-3 all-time against American Conference programs…He has also defeated all 13 current teams in the American…Additionally, he defeated 29 different schools in his head coaching career between his time at Troy and Tulane.
- Coach Sumrall is 32-1 in his coaching career when his team (Troy and now Tulane) outrushes the opposition as Tulane held a 175-20 lead in rushing yards over the Owls…His teams are now 21-0 when holding the opposition under 100 yards rushing.
- Since the beginning of the 2022 season, the Green Wave is now 35-4 (.897) when scoring first.
- Since the beginning of the 2022 season, Tulane has only had three games where it has been forced to punt more than six times (8 vs. Tulsa on Sept. 27, 2025, 9 on Dec. 2, 2023 vs. SMU and 7 on Sept. 17, 2022 vs. Kansas State).
- With a turnover forced against the Owls, Tulane has now won 34 of its last 41 games when forcing a turnover…The program also has won 14 consecutive games when committing fewer turnovers…Coach Sumrall is 31-2 in his head coaching career when winning or the turnover battle is tied (24-1 when winning and 7-1 when tied).
- The Green Wave have outrushed the opposition in 37 of its last 51 games (including 31 of its last 41)…In those games, Tulane holds a 34-3 record (losses in 2022 to Southern Miss and 2023 to Ole Miss and 2025 to UTSA).
- The program also has won 34 consecutive games when leading at the end of the third quarter with the last defeat coming to Memphis in 2021.
- Since the beginning of the 2016 season, Tulane is 59-7 (.893) when leading at the half and 59-9 (.867) when leading at the end of the third quarter.
- Tulane has won 24 consecutive games when allowing 20 or fewer points to the opposition (Last: Tulsa won 20-13 in overtime on Nov. 13, 2021).
