
Bowling Announces Hiring of Sara Vargas

NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University bowling program and head coach Hayley Veitch recently announced the hiring of Sara Vargas as the program's assistant coach.
"I am so excited to have Sara join our coaching staff," explained Coach Veitch. "Sara is an elite accomplished bowler. Her successful bowling career has opened up a number of opportunities for her to travel and share her knowledge with many different cultures around the world. The experience she has gained over the years will help to elevate our bowling program. She has a bubbly personality and is an ideal fit for our environment. I'm looking forward to seeing our progression this year."
Vargas is an accomplished bowling coach and a world champion athlete with over 20 years of collegiate and international bowling experience, including four years as a collegiate bowler at Wichita State University. She is a certified NCDA Coach Developer and USBC Silver and Bronze Level Coach, with a proven record of recruiting, training, and mentoring athletes.
While at Wichita State she placed in the top four every year from 1999-2022 at the Intercollegiate National Bowling Championships. In her international competitive bowling career, Vargas has earned 18 gold medals including in 1996 (Youth Bowling World Championships – Hong Kong), 1997 (South American Bowling Championships – Brazil), 2000 (Colombia National Games), 2001 (Colombia National Championships),2001 (Bolivarianos Games – Equator), 2001 (Tournament of Americans - USA), 2002 (Central American Games – El Salvador), 2003 (National Championship – Colombia), 2006 (World Rankings Masters – Kuwait), 2006 (South American Games – Argentina) and 2008 (Colombian National Games – Colombia).
Her bowling coach and development experience includes with the Kegel Bowling Training Center as an Assistant Coach from 2004-05, the Universal Bowling Centre in Saudi Arabia from 2007-10, Â with the BowlU International as Assistant Coach & Creative Director from 2010-13. with the Saudi Arabian Bowling Federation as the Technical Secretary from 2013-15, with the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee as the Federation Services Advisor & Female Sports Development Coordinator from 2015-18 and with the United State Tennis Association as an Administrative Assistant/Player Development in 2020.
She was awarded with the Sports Merit Cross by the President of Columbia in 1996 for her outstanding bowling career, sport achievement and representing Colombia internationally. She also was recognized by the City of Bogota Civil Order of Merit to recognize her significant contributions to sport and represent the capital at the highest level.
The Tulane bowling program starts the 2025-26 season on Oct. 4-5 at the SWIBC in Fort Worth, Texas. The team competes in a total of 10 tournaments this season including hosting the Colonial Lanes Classic from Nov. 21-23.
Tulane finished the 2024-25 season with an overall record of 60-45 (57.1 winning percentage) and ranked No. 20 in the final National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) poll. The program registered nine top-10 wins a season ago and had a team pin average of 186.9.
Paige Matiasek led the team with her 410 strikes thrown. She was followed by Emma Fetterman with 405 and Mia Stolakis with 401.
The 2025-26 roster includes returners Matiasek, Fetterman, Solakis, Emma Figert, Linnea Holcomb, and Juanelyz Solla.
