Football Falls 20-17 to Army in American Opener

WEST POINT, NY -The Tulane football team (2-3, 0-1 American) lost a back-and-forth 20-17 game to Army (3-2, 2-1 American) on a made 25-yard field goal as the clock expired at Michie Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 10.
With the game tied at 17, Army took over after a failed Tulane fourth down attempt and went on a 12 play, 59-yard drive that was finished on a made 25 yard field goal from Dawson Jones to come away with the close victory.
Army scored first as Cale Hellums rushed it in from the one with 1:42 remaining in the opening quarter to finish off the 12 play, 74-yard drive and go up 7-0. The Black Knights drive started after an early Tulane turnover on the team's opening drive.
Tulane scored the team's first points of the game as Cooper Helmke knocked in a 21-yard field goal to cut the deficit to four, 7-3, with 4:52 until the half. The drive consisted of nine plays and 42 yards.
Following a blocked field goal from Kellen Tasby, Tulane took the lead, 10-7, with a 12 play, 68-yard drive that was finished on a Kadin Semonza one-yard plunge with 3:18 remaining in the third quarter.
Army tied the game at 10 on the made 31-yard field goal from Jones with 9:21 remaining in the game. The drive consisted of 14 plays, 61-yards and covered 8:57 of clock time.
The Green Wave, after a 58-yard kick return from TJ Smith, took the lead again on a 39-yard reception from Jaylin Lucas with 7:44 remaining.
Army tied the game up at 17 on the next possession as Hellums escaped for a 58-yard touchdown at the 6:54 mark of the fourth quarter.
Offense: Kadin Semonza went 14-for-26 for 158 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Johnnie Daniels led the team with his eight carries for 67 yards. DJ Dugar tallied six attempts for 31 yards. Destyn Hill hauled in five passes for 54 yards. Jaylin Lucas caught a pair of passes for 37 yards and a touchdown.
Defense: Dickson Agu led the team with his 12 tackles. Jack Tchienchou and Makai Williams each tallied eight tackles. Dalton Hughes picked up seven stops.
Special Teams: Cooper Helmke was successful on his 21-yard field goal attempt. TJ Smith had a pair of returns for 82 yards with a long of 58. William Hudlow punted three times with an average of 44 yards per kick and placed two kicks inside the 20. Kellen Tasby blocked a field goal.
Team: Army outgained Tulane 348 to 280 including a 329 to 122 edge on the ground. The Black Knights also controlled the ball for 35:34. The first down went 20-17 Army.
Next Tulane returns home to host Memphis on Friday, Oct. 16, at 6:30 p.m. at Yulman Stadium.

- With the loss, Tulane falls to 14-11-1 all-time against Army in a series that started in 1953…Tulane has won five of the last seven contest against the Black Knights but has lost each of the team's last two appearances in West Point…The loss drops Tulane's record to 6-8 all-time on the road against Army
