Kiptanui Wins at Pre-Nationals; Tulane Women Finish Third in Texas
Oct 16, 2026 | Cross Country
COLLEGE STATION, Texas & TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – It was a strong Friday for the Tulane men's and women's cross country teams as they competed in two separate events. The Green Wave women delivered a strong team effort in the Arturo Barrios Invitational, placing third at the Watts Cross Country Course. Though the men placed 11th in the Under Armour Pre-Nationals, Silas Kiptanui shined individually by claiming the win at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course behind an incredible push over the final 3K.
The morning opened with the Green Wave women running the 6K at the Arturo Barrios Invitational. With two runners in the top 11, Tulane, ranked third in the south central region, collected a team score of 136, good for third in the deep 48-team field. Arkansas, ranked first in the south central region, claimed the top spot in the standings with 101 points. Eastern Kentucky was second with 122 points.
Leading the way for the Tulane women was Blezzin Kimutai, whose time of 19:33.9 was good for eighth place. Petra Dos Santos narrowly missed out on the top 10, running a time of 19:38.9 to place 11th. Their times check in at fifth and sixth, respectively, in the Tulane all-time women's 6K records. Eastern Kentucky's Edna Chelulei won the event with a mark of 18:42.1, topping a leaderboard of 387 finishers.
Dana Rojas Vazquez placed 36th with a time of 20:16.3. Dorcas Naibei and Haley Harper round out the Tulane scorers by placing 43rd and 44th, respectively. Naibei ran a time of 20:21.0, while Harper deposited a mark of 20:21.6. Allison Hall placed 60th with a time of 20:40.9, and Isabella Ramos was 78th with a mark of 20:53.6. Isla Bulmer ran a time of 20:56.0 to finish 82nd, and Morgan Matthews was 129th with a time of 21:19.1. Rounding out the Tulane contingent was Sophia Galiano-Sanchez, who placed 237th with a time of 22:12.3.
The Tulane men partook in a strong field at Pre-Nationals, which ran 44 teams deep with six ranked squads, three of whom are top-15 foes. Each of those top-15 teams placed in the top three of the men's blue 8K with No. 8 Syracuse winning alongside 115 team points. Tulane accrued 309 points to place 11th.
However, the highlight of the day was junior Silas Kiptanui, who ran a 23:17.4 to claim the top spot on the leaderboard of 339 finishers. Kiptanui steadily worked his way through the field, biding his time as he was 22nd through the first 3K and eighth after 5K. But over that final 3K, Kiptanui kicked into high gear and powered past the remaining seven competitors to claim the top spot and individual crown, his second of the season (Battle for New Orleans). Furthermore, Kiptanui's time is now 11th in program history. The native of Rift Valley, Kenya, edged out the runner-up by almost a second-and-a-half as Wichita State's Elkana Kipruto posted a time of 23:18.8.
Bernard Cheruiyot placed seventh behind a time of 23:24.9, 15th in program history, to mark two Wave runners in the top 10. Timothy Kibet placed 97th with a time of 23:17.3, and Tommy Rice was 98th with a mark of 24:17.6. Micah Grossman rounds out the Tulane scorers in 106th behind a time of 24:20.8.
Gilbert Rono ran a mark of 24:29.6 to finish 142nd. Conner Wingfield was 148th with a time of 24:30.5, and Paul James Pam placed 184th with a time of 24:42.3 to round out the Tulane lineup.
Four more Wave runners competed in the men's white 8K later in the morning. Cooper Sorsen led the second Tulane contingent with a time of 24:36.7, placing fourth. Juan Giron just missed the top 10, placing 11th with a mark of 24.44.8. Daniel Reza clocked a time of 25.12.5 to finish 39th, and Ty Elliott was 74th with a mark of 25:38.2. Tulane did not garner a team score in this race.
Thus concludes the regular season for Tulane as the Green Wave now turns attention to the upcoming American Conference Cross Country Championships. Tulane will host the meet at Lake Oaks Park on Saturday, October 31. The women's race will kick things off at 9:15 a.m. with the men's race following at 10:00 a.m. The Wave women are aiming to defend their 2025 conference championship as the men look to return to the top after last year's runner-up result.
