HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Tulane delivered a successful final day of the AVCA Collegiate Beach Central Qualification Tournament presented by Rally Volleyball Sunday, going 12-2 overall across the bid and open divisions at the John Hunts Sand Volleyball Courts. Tawny Ensign and Hannah Foor highlighted the day by securing a runner-up result in the bid division to close out an overall 33-5 weekend for the Green Wave.
Â
Tulane's three pairs in the bid division combined to go 3-1 on the day in their respective brackets as Tawny Ensign and Hannah Foor notched a total record of 4-1 for the weekend. After three wins yesterday, the pair began today in the semifinals of the bid division's 32-pair single-elimination bracket. They played a pair from Eastern Kentucky, earning a hard-fought win in two sets by scores of 22-20 and 21-17. They advanced to the championship match against a pair from UAB, this time falling in two sets, 21-15 and 22-20. Despite the loss, Ensign and Foor finish as the runners-up of the tournament. Had Tulane been eligible to receive another bid to the AVCA Pairs National Championship, this result would have secured one for the Wave. However, Tulane already owns the maximum allotment of two bids.
Â
With the tournament played to place, Tulane's other two pairs in the bid division played in the fifth-place consolation bracket today. Skylar Ensign and Gigi Gallegos swept a pair from Southern Miss with scores of 21-18 and 21-17. Katie Hansen and Kaydence Stormes had to go three sets against a UAB pair, but the Tulane tandem outlasted the Blazers. After dropping the opening frame 21-19, the Wave duo pushed back with wins of 21-16 and 15-12. The collective victories cemented the Wave into both fifth and sixth in the overall final standings.
Â
In the open division, Tulane saw action across five total pools. In the first, Ciela Hendrickson and Olivia Johnson swept a UT Martin pair by sets of 21-19 and 21-7. Hendrickson then teamed up with fellow freshman Naomi Lygas to the tune of a 21-10, 21-16 sweep of a Chattanooga pair. In another pool, Loreta Cabule and Hendrickson swept a Southern Miss pair via scores of 21-18 and 21-15. Cabule then paired with Johnson for a sweep of an Austin Peay tandem, 21-12 and 21-11. In the third pool, Tulane again went 2-0, beginning with a drubbing of a Southern Miss pair by Elly Beshears and Lygas. They earned commanding set wins of 21-8 and 21-9. Beshears then worked together with Gabbi Kucinksi to best a North Alabama pair, 21-11 and 21-16.
Â
In the next pool, Lauren Mann and Liz Selinger bested a Tennessee Tech pair 21-17 and 21-5. Johnson and Stormes then faced a pair from Eastern Kentucky, winning in straight sets with scores of 21-12 and 21-15. In the final pool, Gabby Dwyer and Kucinski faced a pair from UT Martin and won in straight sets, 21-17 and 21-8. Rounding out the day's action, Beshears and Dwyer contended with an EKU pair, but they fell in straight sets, 21-16 and 22-20. It was the only pool play loss of the day for Tulane.
Â
"Grateful for another beautiful weekend of fall competition in the new CUSA championship location in Huntsville, Alabama," said assistant coach Cassidi Stabile. "It was wonderful getting to see new tools being used, new partnerships being explored, and courageous choices being made. We are returning to campus better than we left, and that is our goal. Proud of the team and excited to continue training and getting to know what this group of student-athletes are made of! Roll Wave!"
Â
The Green Wave now sets its sights on the AVCA Pairs National Championship, which takes place November 6 to 8, also in Huntsville at the John Hunt Sand Volleyball Courts. Tulane will be represented by two pairs in the event with the ultimate goal of claiming a title. It will be the penultimate event of the fall slate for the Wave, as the fall will then wrap up on November 20 with the Tulane Pairs Tournament at White Sands Volleyball Courts.
