
No. 17 Tulane Opens Season with Strong Weekend Showing in SWIBC I and II

GARLAND, Texas – The 17th-ranked Tulane bowling team delivered a pair of top-two finishes during the opening weekend of play at Lucky Strike Garland, including a team victory in the Southwest Intercollegiate Bowling Conference (SWIBC) I followed by a runner-up result in the SWIBC II. The Green Wave was led individually by freshman Vicky Lizarazo's triumph on day one with Juanelyz Solla claiming runner-up recognition on day two.

The weekend began with the SWIBC I on Saturday, which saw Tulane bowl a 5,317 across the qualifying Baker matches. The Wave fell just behind No. 7 Louisiana Tech in the seeding, as the Bulldogs accrued 5,615 pins for the top spot. However, the programs would meet in the finals bracket portion, where the Wave triumphed head-to-head to claim the team tournament victory.

In the individual standings, the Wave occupied each of the top three spots with both freshman bowlers debuting in style. Vicky Lizarazo did not miss a beat in her first collegiate bowling outing, tallying an 848 over four games at an average of 212 to take first place. Three of her four games eclipsed the 200 mark with scores of 232-225-169-222. Valeria Colon was the runner-up, totaling 780 pins at an average of 195. Her scores were 181-179-193-227. Malia Briggs placed third behind a tally of 767 in her collegiate debut. Averaging 191.75, she delivered scores of 197-198-197-175. All three earned all-tournament team honors.

Paige Matiasek just missed out on all-tournament recognition by placing sixth with a score of 721. Her scores of 225-144-196-156 led to an average of 180.25. The remaining three Tulanians to compete split their games with Linnea Holcomb rolling a 150 and 125 across her two outings. Juanelyz Solla had a 130 in her lone appearance, and Sarah Rubi also bowled a 130.

Tulane carried Saturday's momentum into Sunday's SWIBC II. Today's standings were determined through the traditional games with the Wave notching a team tally of 5,152. This was good for second place, not far behind Louisiana Tech's total of 5,282.

The Wave again occupied three spots on the all-tournament team with a trio in the top five. Solla finished as the event's runner-up with a score of 1,070 across six traditional games. She had an average of 178.33 behind scores of 167-144-224-167-193-175. She was behind only Louisiana Tech's Arianna Araujo (1,112) in the standings. Holcomb placed third with a total of 1,069, just one pin short of Solla's score. Holcomb tallied games of 190-152-201-156-190-180 for an average of 178.17. Colon earned her second all-tournament honor of the weekend with a score of 1,032 at an average of 172, placing fifth. Her game scores were 155-187-201-143-171-175.

Lizarazo bowled four games at scores of 141-172-189-158 to total 660. Her average was 165. Briggs also bowled four games with a total of 654 and an average of 163.5. Her game scores were 161-188-160-145. Rubi appeared in three games with scores of 179-145-172 to total 496 and average 165.33. Matiasek bowled just once, notching a score of 171.

Following a strong opening weekend of play, Tulane returns home this weekend to host the Colonial Lanes Classic Friday, October 9, to Sunday, October 11. The three-day event takes place at Colonial Lanes in Harahan, Louisiana and will mark Tulane's first full weekend tournament of the campaign.
