NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane men's cross country team is back in the USTFCCCA national rankings this week at No. 25 after winning the American Conference Championship this past weekend at Lake Oaks Park. The Green Wave opened the season at No. 22 in the preseason poll and held spots in the top 25 over the opening two rankings.
Tulane is one of three teams from The American on the men's side to either be ranked or receiving votes. Tulsa checks in at No. 30 with Wichita State receiving votes.
The recognition comes after the Wave claimed the American Conference championship on Halloween morning with a team score of 31, besting runner-up Tulsa by 25 points as the Golden Hurricane tallied 56. Silas Kiptanui won the individual title to mark a clean sweep for Tulane. The junior posted a time of 23:28.7 to beat runner-up Elkana Kipruto of Wichita State by three seconds. The results mark two team and two individual titles each in the last three seasons for the Wave.
All five of Tulane's scorers placed inside the top 10 of the meet with six Wave athletes earning all-conference recognition. All nine of Tulane's entrants in the race placed inside the top 40.
Tulane's coaching staff, led by director of cross country/track & field Adrian Myers alongside assistant coach David Silversmith, earned the American Staff of the Year honor. They claimed the award for both the men's and women's side as Tulane also claimed the women's team and individual crowns for a full sweep of the event.
In the south central region, the Wave men remain at No. 2 in the coaches rankings. The Tulane women are third in their respective regional poll.
Next up for Tulane is the NCAA South Central Regional. The meet is held in College Station, Texas, on Friday, November 13. The NCAA National Championships will follow on Saturday, November 21, in Terre Haute, Indiana. The Green Wave is the defending men's champion of the south central region.
