Swimming and Diving Announces Hiring of Richard Marschner
Jun 1, 2026 | Women's Swimming and Diving
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University swimming and diving program, under the direction of head coach Amanda Caldwell, announced the hiring of Richard Marschner as the program's Head Diving Coach.
"Richard brings a championship-level standard to Tulane Diving that aligns directly with who we are becoming as a program," Caldwell said. "His work at the University of Utah has consistently elevated divers on both the men's and women's sides, producing athletes who compete with confidence, precision and presence on the biggest stages.
"What stands out most is his ability to develop high-level divers and resilient competitors who understand how to perform when it matters most," Caldwell continued. "Richard's technical expertise, attention to detail and commitment to daily excellence will immediately impact our program. Just as importantly, he is a values-driven leader who will invest in our women as people first."
Marschner arrives at Tulane after spending the previous 16 seasons as the head diving coach at Utah. During his tenure, he earned four conference Diving Coach of the Year honors, including the 2021 Pac-12 Men's Diving Coach of the Year award, the 2024 Pac-12 Women's Diving Coach of the Year honor, the 2025 Big 12 Men's Diving Coach of the Year recognition and the 2026 Big 12 Men's Diving Coach of the Year honor.
Over his collegiate coaching career, Marschner has coached 16 NCAA qualifiers, eight NCAA All-Americans and guided divers to 30 top-25 performances at the NCAA Championships. His athletes also captured eight conference event championships across the Mountain West, Pac-12 and Big 12 conferences.
Most recently, Marschner coached Elias Petersen to back-to-back First Team All-America honors and a fourth-place finish in the 1-meter event at the 2025 and the 2026 NCAA Championships. She also earned Second Team honors in the 3M in 2026. He also coached Emilia Nilsson Garip, who advanced to the Olympic finals in the 3-meter event at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Additionally his former divers have achieved great professional successes with advanced doctorate degrees in medicine, physical therapy, Education, and Psychology as well as master's degrees in engineering and business.
Before Utah, Marschner spent two seasons at the University of New Orleans from 2008-10, where he restarted the school's diving program following Hurricane Katrina.
"Coming back to New Orleans and Tulane is a full-circle moment for me," Marschner said. "Tulane and New Orleans are very special places to live, work and attend school, and I couldn't be more thrilled about coming home to where things started for my career and family.
"I see so much potential in this program," Marschner added. "Coach Caldwell is a tireless advocate for diving, and I'm incredibly thankful for all of her efforts, along with those of Dr. Charvi Greer, in making this opportunity possible. I'm excited to help build a program that can compete for championships in the American Conference and regularly compete at the NCAA Championships."
A former diver at Louisville from 2000-04, Marschner was a four-time Conference USA runner-up and qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in 2003 and 2004. He earned degrees in political science and justice administration from Louisville in 2005.
Marschner and his wife, May, a New Orleans native and graduate of St. Martin's Episcopal School, have three children: Adelaide, Cullen and Malcolm.
