Home of the New Orleans Zephyrs, the New York Mets? Triple-A affiliate, Zephyr Field will be the Green Wave?s home field early in 2007 as construction crews work to complete Turchin Stadium. |
Like Turchin Stadium, Zephyr Field has been kind to the Green Wave as they have a 51-19 lifetime record (.728) at the Metairie-based stadium.
Last season, Zephhyr served as Tulane's home stadium for all games, and the Green Wave ranked 17th in the nation with an average attendance of 2,888.
Large crowds at Zephyr Field are nothing new for the Green Wave, however, as Tulane holds half of the stadium's Top 10 attendance marks, including the record of 12,069 were in attendance on April 19, 2005, to see Tulane defeat arch-rival LSU, 11-8.
Zephyr Field was the host site of the 2001 FedEx Conference USA Tournament and the 2001 NCAA New Orleans Super Regional, where Tulane defeated LSU in a best-of-three series to earn its first trip to the College World Series.
Zephyr Field also set Conference USA Tournament attendance records in 2001 when 14,001 fans passed through the turnstiles to witness the Green Wave win the championship with a 21-4 decision over USF.
"The Shrine" opened on April 11, 1997, as the home stadium of the New Orleans Zephyrs, then the Triple-A affiliate of the Houston Astros (now of the New York Mets). In 1999, it hosted the Triple-A All-Star Game and the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. The previous season, Zephyr Field hosted the 1998 C-USA Tournament, which Tulane won, and the championship game was the first nationwide broadcast shown live from the facility.
The stadium showed its versatility by hosting the New Orleans Storm (soccer) of the A-League in 1998 and 1999, as well as the 1997 U.S. Open Cup game between the Storm and the Dallas Burn, the Storm's Major League Soccer affiliate, that drew more than 7,000 fans.
The soccer practice field, located beyond the parking lots behind right field, has been the site of numerous prep playoff games, and served as home field of the Tulane soccer team from 1996-2000.

The state of Louisiana paid $21 million to build Zephyr Field as part of a capital outlay bill that also included the New Orleans Saints' state-of-the-art practice facility, which is located behind Zephyr Field on Airline Drive, as well as the New Orleans Arena adjacent to the Superdome where the Tulane basketball teams play some of its home games.
Zephyr Field features 16 VIP luxury suites, a swimming pool, two hot tubs in right field, the "Party Shack" in the right field corner, and the "Home Run Porch" located beyond the left field wall.
