Burr comes to Tulane after two years as an assistant coach at George Washington University where he helped guide the Colonials to school records for victories in each of his two seasons there, finishing 37-21 in 2000 and 38-23 in 2001. Burr served as the Colonials[apos] pitching coach in the fall of 1999, then changed responsibilities in 2000 to infield and outfield defense, hitting instruction and recruiting coordination.
In 2001, George Washington led the Atlantic 10 Conference and ranked 19th in the NCAA with a .325 team batting average while also leading the A-10 in runs, hits, RBI, home runs and total bases. Defensively, the Colonials led the conference in fielding percentage both seasons while turning a conference-best 52 double plays in 2001. Burr also helped coach seven all-conference players, an ABCA All-American and recruited the only freshman on the 2001 A-10 All-Championship team.
Burr began his coaching career where he played collegiately, George Mason University, serving as an assistant to the Patriots[apos] program from 1996-97. During his stay in Fairfax, Va., Burr helped George Mason set the team single-season batting average with a .320 mark in 1997 and helped develop current major league outfielder Mike Colangelo.
In addition to his collegiate assisting duties, Burr also served as the head coach for the Arlington (Va.) Senators of the Clark Griffin Collegiate Baseball League, a summer-league team composed of college players from across the nation. From 1997-2001, Burr led the Senators to a combined 202-70 record, four league championships and three AAABA National Championships. Fifty-five of his players went on to play professional baseball, and in 1998, his team received the Mid-Atlantic Professional Baseball Scouts Association Award as the most outstanding amateur franchise.
As a player, Burr was a star for the Patriots from 1990-92, culminating with a Colonial Athletic Association Championship and NCAA Regional berth in 1992. Burr garnered the CAA Player of the Year title in 1992, posting a .384 batting average with 17 home runs and 67 RBI. He also set a GMU record with a 20-game hitting streak. He led the conference in RBI and doubles that season, and ranked in the top three in home runs, batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage, earning first-team All-CAA, All-East Region and All-Virginia honors. Previously, Burr earned first-team All-Metropolitan Collegiate recognition in 1990.
Drafted by the Texas Rangers in 1992, Burr hit .340 with six home runs for the Port Charlotte Rangers, setting a team record and leading the league with 47 RBI. He earned a spot on the All-Star team and just missed the Gulf Coast League Triple Crown by 11 points of batting average. In 1993, Burr led the Charleston Rainbows, the Class A South Atlantic League affiliate, with 65 RBI and was second in home runs with 10.
A prep standout, Burr was an all-district and all-region selection as a senior at James Madison High in 1988. Burr was a member of the 1987 Virginia American Legion State Championship team and was named the 1998 Virginia American Legion Player of the Year after hitting .535 with 21 home runs and 63 RBI in 41 games.
A native of Vienna, Va., Burr completed his bachelor[apos]s degree in business administration from Strayer University in 1999.
