Jesse Schmitt comes to New Orleans with four years of coaching experience at two different institutions.
Over the past three seasons, Schmitt worked as the Purdue University football team’s Special Teams and Running Backs Graduate Assistant.
During his three seasons at Purdue, Schmitt worked with First Team All-Big Ten returner Rondale Moore and Third-Team All-Big Ten punter Joe Schopper. He also coached Big Ten Honorable Mention kickers Spencer Evans and JD Dellinger (2019 and 2020).
This past season, Schmitt served as the acting Special Teams Coordinator in the Boilermakers’ 24-20 win over Iowa.
Schmitt began his coaching career at Western Kentucky University in 2016 where he served as a Volunteer Assistant, working primarily with the Hilltoppers’ special teams’ unit. During his lone season at WKU, the Hilltoppers ranked fifth in the Football Outsiders FEI Rating for Special Teams, as the captured their second consecutive Conference USA title, finishing with an 11-3 record.
Schmitt also worked with All-Conference USA special teamers Nacarious Fant (First Team – punt returner), Jake Collins (Second Team – punter), Kylen Towner (Second Team – kick returner), Skyler Simcox (Honorable Mention - kicker) and Nolan Dowling (Honorable Mention – long snapper).
In addition, Schmitt played a key role in helping WKU’s Kylen Towner set the NCAA record for kickoff return average (40.3).
Schmitt is a two-time Purdue University graduate, earning his bachelor’s degree of science in organizational leadership and supervision and a minor in communication in 2014 and his master’s degree in technology leadership and innovation. As a player, Schmitt was a four-year starter at long snapper for the Boilermakers and was a four-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree. He also was a member of the Boilermaker Athletic Council.
Following his collegiate career, Schmitt earned a Rookie Mini-Camp invitation with the Minnesota Vikings in 2015. He also earned a preseason camp invitation with the Green Bay Packers in 2016. In 2017, he received an offseason workout with the New Orleans Saints.
Schmitt’s father was the former Sports Information Director at the University of Miami during the 1980’s. His mother also attended Miami where she competed in swimming. She was later inducted into the Miami Sports Hall of Fame.
Schmitt and his wife Carly have a golden retriever.
