Justin Schemmel began his role as the Green Wave’s Deputy Athletics Director and Chief Operating Officer in February of 2024.
Schemmel, a product of Eden Prairie, MN, will serve as the Olive and Blue’s sport administrator for football, baseball, track and field and cross country and sailing, while also overseeing the department’s facilities, events and capital projects.
He came to New Orleans after 10 years at Northern Iowa, where he finished his term as the department’s Deputy AD for Internal Operations.
While with the Panthers, Schemmel was the sport administrator for football, men's basketball and wrestling. He also handled special projects, compliance, capital projects, facilities, concessions and events.
Schemmel previously served as UNI's Associate AD for Administration from 2014-15 and its Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance in 2013-14.
Prior to his arrival at UNI, Schemmel served as the Associate Director of Athletic Compliance at the University of Minnesota. He was also an instructor for an NCAA Governance course at Minnesota and a Sports Law course at the University of St. Thomas. He served as Assistant Director of Athletic Compliance for three years with the Golden Gopher athletic department.
Schemmel practiced private law from 2008-10 before returning to intercollegiate athletics. He received his juris doctorate from St. Thomas (Minn.) in 2008 and was an athletic compliance intern at Minnesota during the 2007-08 school year.
He played collegiate baseball at Kansas State (1998-99) and at North Dakota State (2000-2003). He was a double major at NDSU and earned bachelor of science degrees in business administration and management information systems in 2004.
Schemmel and his wife, Carrie, have two sons, Jackson and Jarren.
