TAMPA, Fla. - Tenth-seeded Tulane registered the first upset of the Conference Volleyball Championship when it beat seventh-seeded UNC Charlotte, 3-0 Thursday afternoon at the Sun Dome. Not only did this mark the first time in C-USA Championship history that a tenth seed has beaten a seventh seed, but it also moved the Green Wave (13-16) into a quarterfinal match with second seed and American Division co-champion Louisville Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. (EST). The 49ers close their season at 13-17.
The Green Wave jumped on UNC Charlotte early, taking the first game, 15-3. According to 49er coach Patty Dennison, this immediate momentum was crucial.
"Tulane definitely came to play," she said. "(Second Team All-C-USA) Kim Sentmore is always a threat, and her whole game was on today - passing, attacking, everything."
Indeed, with 24 kills and 26 digs, Sentmore posted her 15th 20-plus kill performance and her 19th double-double of the season. But as Tulane coach Betsy Ferrer is quick to point out, it was far from a one person show.
"Kim Sentmore and Lindsay Bennett (11 kills and 10 digs) did a great job for us offensively and defensively," she said. "But nothing is accomplished unless the whole team is into it, and they were today."
Lacey Vicknair (13 kills) and Erin Dobyanski (10 kills and seven digs) also helped the Green Wave take games two and three, 15-11 and 15-12, respectively. For UNC Charlotte, Ozlem Ayture had 10 kills and 12 digs, and Emily Bowers added 10 kills.
