New Orleans - After finishing 1998 tied for the nation's longest current winning streak at 13 games, Tulane's first opportunity to extend that streak begins with a key Conference USA matchup at Southern Miss, part of the Green Wave's 1999 football schedule announced Wednesday.
"This is certainly an exciting schedule for our program, especially coming off the most successful season in school history," said Director of Athletics Sandy Barbour, referring to seventh-ranked Tulane's 12-0 campaign in 1998. "We anticipate an exciting atmosphere in the Superdome for our fans and a successful campaign."
Tulane and first-year head coach Chris Scelfo will welcome five opponents to the Superdome, including Conference USA foes Army, Memphis and UAB. SMU and Southwestern Louisiana are the Wave's two non-conference home opponents.
The road schedule features three bowl teams from 1998, including non-conference teams Syracuse and Ole Miss. Tulane will also travel to USM, East Carolina, Houston and Navy.
"Our schedule is very demanding and challenging for our club," said Scelfo, "especially playing three road games against bowl teams. I don't know if we could have a more difficult opener than playing at Southern Miss with a new starting quarterback and eight new starters on defense.
"We'll have to convince our players that we're no longer 12-0. We're now 0-0. But every team we play will have our game circled on the schedule because of what Tulane accomplished last year, so we'll have to be prepared for a battle each and every week."
