HEAD COACH CHRIS SCELFO ON GOALS FOR SPRING PRACTICE:
"To evaluate our talent and see where we are strong and where we might be lacking. Well get the key players in key positions to make plays on both sides of the ball.
ON SCELFOS COACHING PHILOSOPHY:
"Were going to be wide open on offense, incorporate movement into our offensive system with the same tempo weve had here in the past. We feel good that our personnel fits what we want to do on offense.
"Defensively, were going to be very aggressive and try to put a lot of pressure on offenses. Something that our defense is set up to do is create a lot of mistakes by the offense."
ON BUILDING ON THE 12 0 SEASON OF 1998:
"One thing our players have to realize is that most of the players that won that bowl game arent here anymore. For example, weve got to have somebody step up and replace the two kickers we lost. One out of every six plays is a kick of some sort, so thats a very important part of the game.
"Were not 12 0 anymore. Somebody has got to take the leadership role to continue what weve started here and create an atmosphere where every time we take the field were going to win the football game."
ON REPLACING QB SHAUN KING:
"You dont usually replace quarterbacks overnight. It took Shaun King two or three years before he got going. We dont have that long to wait, so whomever steps in and is the quarterback will be someone we feel good about. Theyre going to have to perform week in and week out. A lot of pressure is going to be put on our quarterback.
"I think we have two different types of quarterbacks. In Patrick Ramsey, we have a kid who has great potential to throw the ball. He throws the deep ball well and throws it with a lot of velocity. Hes not as mobile as were hoping he can become. In Derrick Joseph, weve got someone who is very athletic, fast and can run. Hes got to work on his velocity on the ball and being able to throw the deep ball. I think both of them bring a lot to the table and both of them can fit into our system. Our system is multiple enough that we can build it around whichever one emerges as the starting quarterback."
ON OFFENSIVE STRENGTHS:
"I think the offensive strength of our team is going to be our line and our receivers. Losing a senior like (receiver) P.J. (Franklin) hurts some, but weve got some young men that will step in. JaJuan (Dawson) has got to take the leadership role out there. Kerwin Cook had an excellent bowl practice and an excellent bowl game. Adrian Burnette is an outstanding sprinter, so he brings a lot of speed to the table. Were going to take a look at John Wilson as a running back this spring.
"Our line lost one starter (G Mike Gumiela), but we get one back who was ineligible last year in Charles Caldwell. We have a little depth there. Torie Taulli had a chance to play last year. Chrys Bullock and Derrick Bugg have a lot of potential. We have some good players up front."
ON THE GREEN WAVE DEFENSE:
"We lost four of five defensive linemen, but we have some talented young kids coming back. We also have some incoming freshmen that will help us there.
"We have some linebackers who can run. Some of them just havent played much. There not much experience among our front seven on defense, but we have some talent there that can create things.
"In the secondary, we have some kids with game experience, which helps, but we also have some talent. And we have some more coming in with our freshman class this fall. My philosophy is that Im not interested in experience as much as I am talent. The only way to get game experience is by playing and the only way youre going to play is to have talent. It goes hand in hand, you have to have talent to get the experience."
ON EXPECTATIONS:
"Our goal is to win every game we play, regardless of who they are or where we play them. Starting out with Southern Mississippi on the road is going to be a very emotional and physical game.
"The expectation level at Tulane has been raised. Something our players have to realize is that every time we play there are a lot of people counting on us to win the game. Were no longer the homecoming game."
ON LONG TERM GOALS AT TULANE:
"I think we can compete for the conference title year in and year out. Our short term and long term goals are going to include the conference championship. With the increasing strength of our schedule, over time, I believe well be able to compete for a national championship. And thats a goal that is in line with what this university stands for. The academic integrity will never be questioned at Tulane, and its something were proud of and will always be proud of.
DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR PETE McGINNIS DEFENSIVE PHILOSOPHY:
"We are going to try to institute an exciting brand of defense that matches the style of offense that theyve become known for around here. Were certainly not going to be passive. We want to make things happen. We want to dictate to the offense as opposed to the offense dictating to us. Were going to do some things alignment wise that will make it very difficult to run on us and force the other team to become one dimensional. If we can take the run away and know that theyre going to have to throw, then we can do a lot of things from the passing game standpoint.
"Not only do we want to do some aggressive things to get some sacks, but we want to do some things that creates opportunities for us to create turnovers. Were going to emphasis to our players that well be aggressive, were going to dictate the action of the game, and were going to create big plays."
ASSISTANT HEAD COACH FRANK SCELFO OFFENSIVE GOALS FOR SPRING:
"We need to accomplish three things this spring offensively: 1) Evaluate the quarterback situation, 2) make sure that everyone is on the same page offensively. I think the players will understand what were trying to do. And 3) find a leader offensively."
ON THE QB SITUATION:
"Somebody has got to step up and make some plays. Weve got eight starters back on offense, so those eight guys have to raise the level of their game for us to be as good as or better than we were last year. Whoever our quarterback is, he needs to make sure and put us in the right play and keep us out of bad situations."
