COVINGTON, La. - Tulane's first day of freshmen-only practices Friday did nothing to dissuade head coach Chris Scelfo's enthusiasm for his first Green Wave recruiting class.
Scelfo sent Tulane's newcomers through a pair of two-hour workouts at St. Paul's School, workouts that reinforced his positive feelings about the freshmen.
"I'm very excited about this class. There's a lot of speed and athleticism. It's obvious we're going to have eight or 10 or 12 of these guys are going to contribute this fall. We have have some kids here who can play.
"We wanted to supplement our returning team with speed, and I think we did that. Our recruiting philosophy will always be to get the best athletes available, and we did that with this class."
Scelfo pointed out that, although impressive, the first day of practice wasn't without the normal freshman jitters.
"Their anxiety level was very high. They all looked great in the first 10 minutes, but then the nerves took over, which was expected."
The freshmen will go through another round of two-a-day practices on Saturday before the varsity comes to Covington on Sunday. Tulane's first full-squad workout is scheduled for Monday morning.
