NEW ORLEANS - Tulane head coach Chris Scelfo described the Green Wave's Tuesday morning full-gear workout as "a good practice," and in particular pointed out the improvement in his young defense.
"We came out and worked hard," said Scelfo. "We had some situational stuff that I thought the defense responded well to. Offensively, we executed well. Overall, it was a good practice.
"I think the defense is coming around. They're getting better. When you're dealing with a bunch of kids who haven't played, I think it's just a matter of time before they gel. They're starting to see the light."
The Green Wave has eight starters it must replace defensively from its 12-0 season of a year ago.
Tulane continued practice Tuesday afternoon with a workout in shoulder pads and shorts. The Green Wave continues two-a-day drills the remainder of this week. Saturday the Wave players participate in Fan Day, scheduled at 11:30 a.m. at the Wilson Center. Tulane fans are invited to come get autographs and take pictures of their favorite players.
The Green Wave opens the 1999 season against Southern Miss on Labor Day, Sept. 6, at 2 p.m. The game will be televised nationally by Fox Sports Net.
