NEW ORLEANS -Citing "family obligations," Tulane women's tennis coach Jennifer Tuero Melius announced her resignation Monday. Assistant women's tennis coach David Schumacher was named as Melius' interim replacement, according to interim athletics director Scott Devine.
Melius posted a 10-year record of 147-81 at Tulane, including NCAA regional appearances in two of her final three seasons. Her final Green Wave squad finished 18-6 and advanced to NCAA post-season competition.
"Tulane has and will always be a part of my life," said Melius, "but my heart tells me that I need to spend more time with my family.
"The Green Wave women's tennis program has never been stronger. I am proud of the way my teams have represented the university, both academically and athletically. David Schumacher has been an integral part of our success, and I know that with the outstanding support he'll receive from Scott Devine and the rest of the athletic department that he will continue to move the program forward."
Schumacher, a New Orleans native and former Tulane tennis letterman, has spent the last three seasons as a Green Wave assistant coach.
"I've learned a lot from Jennifer about collegiate coaching and I am very grateful to her," said Schumacher. "Although I've had a long relationship with Tulane, I'm particular excited about this opportunity. I've known these girls and they are an exceptional group of people as well as tennis players, which is one of the reasons I'm eager to take on the job."
"We are thankful for the time and energy Jennifer has given this athletic program," said Devine. "We wish her and her family the very best. We also have great faith that David will continue the recent success our program has enjoyed."
