BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - - UAB's Denise Peters scored 13 minutes into sudden-death overtime to hand the Tulane women's soccer team its first loss of the season, as the Lady Blazers claimed a 2-1 win on Sunday.
Despite the loss, Tulane's Colleen Lake set a new single-season school record with her 18th point of the season. The Green Wave falls to 5-1-0, 1-1-0 on the season, while UAB improves to 3-5-0, 2-0-0.
Despite a first half that saw Tulane hold a 10-4 advantage in shots, the two teams entered the halftime break deadlocked at 0-0. Lake narrowly missed giving Tulane the lead in the 34th minute when her header glanced off the post and back into play before it was cleared by the UAB defense. The Wave had another chance less than a minute later, but Jaclyn Scalzo's header was parried off the cross bar by UAB goalkeeper Lisa Nowoslawski.
UAB struck first in the second half to take a 1-0 lead. Lisa Davies volleyed the ball past Green Wave goalkeeper Jaclyn Urso from 18 yards out to put the Lady Blazers ahead in the 63rd minute.
Tulane fought back, however, equalizing on Alycia Wanat's third goal of the season. Leslie McCombs started the play with a throw in on the right touchline, feeding Lake who nodded the ball to Wanat. Wanat slid past a diving Nowoslawski and redirected the ball into the open UAB net with less the five minutes to play, forcing overtime.
In the extra frame, the teams traded possession's in each other's half, before Peters' strike in the 104th minute ended the contest.
Tulane held a 14-10 advantage in shots and recorded six corner kicks to UAB's two. Nowoslawski notched six saves, while Urso was called on to make just two saves in the Green Wave nets.
The Green Wave returns to action on Wednesday, playing host to in-state rival LSU at the New Orleans Storm Soccer Facility at Zephyr Field. Kick-off is set for 5:00 p.m.
