Cross Country Sweeps Individual Ttiles

LAFAYETTE, La. - The Tulane cross country teams posted its best efforts of the season in capturing both individual titles and winning the women's team championship at the Popeye's Ragin' Cajun Invitational.
The Green Wave women swept the top three individual places en route to its first win of the season. Junior Hanne Lyngstad won the women's three-mile event with a school-record time of 16:47.62. She finished nearly 45 seconds ahead of teammate Katrina Gemmell, who finished second with a time of 17:32.43. Freshman Theresa Maru finished third with a time of 17:35.75 in her first collegiate event.
Also posting strong finishes for the Tulane women were Hanna Ritakallio, who finished sixth with a time of 18:00.87, Lyndie Galka, who finished 15th with a time of 18:49.09, Angela Milner, who finished 27th with a time of 20:14.87, Lana Garner, who finished 28th with a time of 20:16.78, Donna Barnett, who finished 34th with a time of 20:43.90, and Kathleen Mulreed, who finished 35th with a time of 20:44.96.
Tulane's team score of 27 topped the field of eight teams. Louisiana State finished second with 42 points, while Southeastern Louisiana finished third with 72.
The news was also good for the Tulane men, as freshman Solomon Kandie led the team to a runner-up finish. Competing in his first collegiate event, Kandie won the men's four-mile race with a time of 19:43.24, which is the third-fastest time in school history. He was one of two Green Wave men to post top-10 finishes, as Peter Rotich finished fourth with a time of 20:36.31.
Other Tulane finishers included Meshack Mulupi, who finished 12th with a time of 21:16.50, Meyer Friedman, who finished 15th with a time of 21:23.50, Mark Williams, who finished 30th with a time of 22:40.34, and Anthony Lagat, who finished 39th with a time of 23:01.09.
LSU won the men's team event with a score of 34. Tulane finished second with 52 points, while Lamar finished third with 94.
Tulane will next be in action on Friday, Oct. 1, as the squad is scheduled to compete at the Auburn Bank Invitational in Auburn, Ala.
