Cross Country Opens Season With Two Top-Five Finishes

NEW ORLEANS - Both the Tulane men's and women's cross country teams earned top-five finishes at Saturday's Tulane Green Wave Cross Country Invitational, which was run at Levee Oaks Park.
Sophomore Peter Rotich led the Tulane men to third-place finish. The Kapsabet, Kenya, native posted a time of 15:35.50 in the men's three-mile race to finish in 10th place. He was one of three Green Wave runners to finish in the top 20 collegiate finishers.
The University of Alabama placed four runners in the top seven finishers to earn the victory with a team score of 26. Leading the way for the Crimson Tide was senior Tim Broe, who ran a 14:49.40. Southern Miss rounded out the top three teams with 31 points.
Also finishing for Tulane was Myer Friedman (20th/16:45.50), Mark Williams (21st/17:01.30), Justin Anstey (23rd/17:13.30), Edrige Darling (34th/18:28.10), and Noel Comrie (46th22:42.50).
On the women's side, two top-10 individual finishes pushed Tulane to a fourth-place team finish in the two mile run. Katrina Gemmell (12:00.40) and Hanna Ritakallio (12:04.90) finished sixth and seventh respectively to lead the Wave.
Alabama also captured the women's team title by sweeping the top three places. Freshman Dawn Boggs ran an 11:29.30 to win the event an help the Crimson Tide to a total of 46 points. UAB finished second with 64, while Southeastern Louisiana finished third with 74 points.
Also finishing for the Tulane women were Lyndie Galka (22nd/13:12.50), Lana Garner (26th/13:32.00), Donna Barnett (34th/13:46.10), Nikelola Balogun (44th/14:24.00), and Kathleen Mulreed (47th/14:33.90).
Tulane will next be in action on Saturday, Sept. 11, at the LSU Opener in Baton Rouge, La. The meet is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
