TAMPA, Fla. - - Freshman Jacque Gruber scored in the 76th minute to lift the Tulane women's soccer team to a 3-2 win over Conference USA rival South Florida on Sunday.
Tulane improved to 7-7-0 overall and stands at 4-4-0 in Conference USA play. South Florida dropped to 4-7-1 and is 3-5-1 in league action. The win was Tulane's first-ever against the Bulls in seven meetings.
Wave sophomore Mandy Schumacher, playing in her home town of Tampa, opened the scoring just six minutes into the contest. She took a feed from Gruber before finding the back of the net for a 1-0 Tulane advantage. The Bulls answered 13 minutes later when Siri Nordy evened the scores at 1-1 with her goal in the 19th minute. The teams entered the halftime break on even terms.
Tulane again claimed the lead when freshman Tiffany Lawson scored in the 67th minute after taking a pass from Kelley Tinsley. South Florida answered again, however, tying the game at 2-2 with a goal from Danielle Aldrich in the 68th minute.
Gruber gave the Green Wave the victory with her goal in the 76th minute. Lawson supplied the assist on the goal, which would prove to be the game-winner.
"We really got into a rhythm of play early today," head coach Eliot Perkins said. "This is a good win for the program."
Goalkeeper Jaclyn Urso faced 16 South Florida shots and recorded five saves in the process. Tulane posted seven shots, forcing two saves from USF goalkeeper Valerie Wetzel.
Tulane returns to New Orleans for its final home games of the 2000 season next weekend. The Green Wave start the weekend against DePaul on Friday before playing host to league-leaders Marquette on Sunday.
