Women's Basketball Cruises Past Nicholls State

NEW ORLEANS, La. - - The Tulane women's basketball team used a 19-1 run midway through the second half to claim a 73-54 win over Nicholls State at Fogelman Arena on Friday.
With the win, Tulane improves to 2-1 on the season, while Nicholls dropped its first contest of the year to fall to 0-1.
Tulane took a 32-17 lead into the locker room, and quickly increased it to 34-17, before the Lady Colonels rallied to trim the margin to 11, 40-29, with 13:06 left. The teams traded baskets, and Tulane led 48-35, when Janell Burse hit a lay-up to start a 14-0 Tulane burst. Nicholls State Tremaine Robinson hit a free throw to brieflt halt the run, but Kelly Scanlon hit a three-pointer and a pair of free throws to give the Wave a 67-36 lead at the 6:34 mark.
All-America center Janell Burse led Tulane with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting, while also pulling down five rebounds. Scanlon added 10 points, thanks in part to a 7-of-8 performance from the free-throw line. Sophomore Teana McKiver was the third Wave player in double figures, also chipping in 10 points.
The Green Wave jumped out to an early lead, scoring 12 straight points to claim a 14-2 lead at the 12:06 mark of the first half. Nicholls State rallied to within eight, 15-7, before Tulane posted a 15-3 run to take a 30-10 lead with 3:12 left before the break. Six different Tulane players scoring during the burst.
Freshman guard Kelly Nadeau had another solid night, dishing out a game-high five assists, while Sarah Goree pulled down a career-high eight rebounds. Goree and senior Taryn Turnbull each handed out four assists, and Kelly Scanlon had two assists without a turnover. Gwen Slaughter also had eight rebounds and blocked two shots.
Tulane connected on 47.1 percent of its shots (24-of-51), while holding the Lady Colonels to just a 37.5 percent effort (21-of-56). The Wave also held Nicholls to just 24.0 percent shooting in the first half (6-of-25). Both teams committed 24 turnovers, while Tulane won the battle of the boards, pulling down rebounds to Nicholls State's 32.
Tulane returns to action on Sunday, as the Green Wave face off against cross-town rival New Orleans at the Alario Center on the Westbank. Tip-off has been moved back to 8 p.m.
