Tulane Baseball Upsets Auburn, 11-8

NEW ORLEANS, La. -- James Jurries went 4-for-5 and led the Tulane (4-1) baseball team to an 11-8 upset of No. 7 Auburn (9-1) in their first game of the Winn Dixie Showdown on Friday. This was the first loss for the Tigers this season.
The Wave offense came out swinging as three Green Wave players recorded a multiple RBI game. Tulane was 11 for 21 with runners in scoring position and boosted the team's batting average to .308, marking a season high for the Wave.
Jurries (2B) led the Wave as he recorded two RBI, one double and went 4-for-5 on the evening. Designated hitter Steve Shirley went 2-for-4 with two RBI in his season debut. Catcher Nick Herz recorded a season high two RBI and two runs. Herz was 2-for-3.
The Green Wave jumped on the board first and never relinquished the lead. Auburn threatened in the fifth as Gabe Gross hit a three RBI home run into right to put the Tigers within two runs of the Wave, but Tulane held on to win 11-8.
Freshman Matt Foster (1-0) picked up his first collegiate win after relieving starter Henry Bonilla in the fifth. Foster pitched 3 1/3 innings, gave up three hits, one run and struck out three. Closer Brandon Belanger tied the Tulane career saves record with his fourth of the year. He has recorded 20 saves over one season and five games as a Greenie.
Auburn's Hayden Gliemmo (2-1) got the loss for Auburn, his first of the season. Gross was 3-for-5 with three RBI, a home run and a double.
In earlier action in the Winn Dixie Showdown, UNO upset No. 4 Alabama 7-6.
Tulane plays at 4:00 p.m. against Auburn in the Superdome.
