NEW ORLEANS, La. - - The Tulane women's tennis team held off a determined Harvard squad, posting a 6-3 win at Goldring Stadium on Monday.
Tulane dropped the first set in five of six singles matches, but rallied to post wins in four of those matches to take a 5-1 lead into doubles. Anna Monhartova posted a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Vedica Jain at the No. 1 spot, while Maiko Cook rallied to post a convincing 6-7, 6-0, 6-0 win over Sanaz Ghazal at the No. 2 position. Anneli Axsater gave Tulane the No. 4 singles win with her 2-6, 7-6, 7-5 win over Harvard's Jennie Timoney, while Jessica Kessler cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over the Crimson's Lara Naqushbandi at the No. 5 position. Tulane's Molly Rollauer was a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 winner over Sarah McGinty at the No. 6 spot. Harvard's lone singles win came at the No. 3 spot, where Sanja Bajin recorded a 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 win over Julie Morris.
In doubles action, Harvard won two doubles matches, posting wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. The Crimson team of Ghazal and Bajin were 9-7 winners over Tulane's Maiko Cook and Olga Mikhailova, while the Harvard duo of Jain and Andrea Magyera recorded an 8-5 victory over Tulane's Anna Monhartova and Jessica Kessler. Tulane rallied to win the No. 3 doubles match when Julie Morris and Joyce Bergman recorded a 9-8 win over Harvard's Fleur Broughton and Sarah McGinty.
Tulane returns to action on Feb. 29, when the Green Wave play host to Eastern Michigan at the Goldring Tennis Center. Match time is set for 12 p.m.
