STARKVILLE, Miss. - - The Tulane women's tennis team dropped its first dual match of the spring season, falling 8-1 to No. 32 Mississippi State on Friday.
Mississippi State (2-0) swept all six singles spots to assure victory. MSU's Amelie Detriviere posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Tulane's Anna Monhartova at the No. 1 spot, while Bulldog Ivana Belancic was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Jessica Kessler at the No. 2 position. The No. 3 match went to State's Carole Soubis, who was a 6-3, 7-5 winner over Tulane's Maiko Cook. Claudia Oliveira gave Mississippi State a win at the No. 4 position, posting a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Julie Morris, while Andrea Lord was a 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 winner over Tulane's Anneli Axsater at the No. 5 spot. MSU wrapped up singles play when Eimear Sloan turned in a 6-2, 6-1 win over Joyce Bergman at the No. 6 spot.
Tulane's lone bright spot came at No. 2 doubles, where the team of Kessler and Monhartova recorded an 8-4 win over Belancic and Linda Mattsson. Sloan and Soubis posted an 8-5 win over Tulane's Bergman and Cook at the No. 1 position, while Detriviere and Oliveira were 8-3 winners over Morris and Axsater at the No. 3 doubles spot.
Tulane returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 12, as the Green Wave play host to Central Florida at the Goldring Tennis Stadium. The match is set to begin at 12 p.m.
