NEW ORLEANS - When the Tulane football team opens its 107th season of competition this fall, it will face something that only one other Green Wave team has...three road games to start the season.
For just the second time since the program's inception in 1893, Tulane will open a football season with three road games, as part of the team's 2000 schedule which was announced Monday.
"This is an extremely challenging schedule, particularly on the front end," said interim Director of Athletics Scott Devine. "Conference USA has arrived as an excellent football conference and we will feature four exciting home league games. The key for us will be to play well early and generate momentum for a strong finish with three home games in November."
Head coach Chris Scelfo and the Green Wave start the season-opening road trip on Sept. 2 at Ole Miss. The Wave then faces a key Conference USA matchup at East Carolina on Sept. 16 before the road swing ends with a Sept. 23 game at SMU. Tulane has opened on the road in three of the last four seasons.
"Our schedule is very demanding." said Scelfo. "To start the season with three big road games will test this team's character early on."
The Wave opens play in the Louisiana Superdome on Sept. 30 against Cincinnati. It is the first of five home games for Green Wave this season. In addition to an Oct. 14 meeting with Southern Miss, Tulane closes the schedule with three consecutive home games: Houston (Nov. 4), Navy (Nov. 11) and Memphis (Nov. 18).
"This is the type of schedule that can propel us into the upper echelon of college football if we can meet these challenges," Scelfo said. "We will be prepared to battle each and every week."
The team will also travel to Louisiana-Lafayette, Army and Louisville, one of four teams on the schedule to participate in bowl games last season.
