Track Posts Strong Showing at Houston Meet

HOUSTON -- The Tulane track and field team put forth a solid effort Saturday, capturing nine event wins at the Carl Lewis International Sports Complez and Tom Tellez Track Dedication Meet.
Led by senior Hanne Lyngstad, the Tulane women won six events and finished second in the team competition. Lyngstad won two events, the 800 (2:12.39) and 1,500 meters (4:23.98), and helped the Green Wave women total 125 points in the five-team meet. Baylor won the meet with a team score of 147.
Rebecca Murphy won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.96 seconds, while teammate Asha James won the 200 with a clocking of 24.23 seconds. Lana Garner won the 400-meter hurdles by four tenths of a second with a time of 1:00.31, while Cecilie Rise dominated the triple jump with a winning mark of 41-feet, 8 ? inches. Rise won the event by more than five feet and posted a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
The Green Wave men were also successful, earning three event wins. Tulane finished fifth in the team scoring with 69 points. Houston won the six-team men's competition with 124 points.
Tulane's Peter Rotich was victorious in the men's 1,500 meters, posting a time of 3:50.35. Also winning for the Wave was Solomon Kandie in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:57.10, while Nathan Junius captured the javelin with a mark of 216-feet, 2-inches.
The Tulane track and field team is next scheduled to compete on Saturday, April 15, at the U.S. Collegiate Series Meet in Tallahassee, Fla.
