NEW ORLEANS, La. - Steve Shirley's bottom of the ninth RBI single propelled Tulane (21-12-1, 7-2-1 C-USA) to a 3-2 win over conference rival Saint Louis (12-17, 3-1 C-USA) Friday evening.
Heading into the bottom of the ninth, Billikens starting pitcher Dan Shouse held Tulane to just four hits and one run. After walking the lead off hitter James Jurries, Shouse gave up an RBI triple to Jake Gatureau who evened the score at two runs each. Shirley drove in the game winning run on a single to left.
Shouse (1-6) went eight innings gave up three runs, walked three and struck out three.
For Tulane, Shirley was 1-for-3 with one RBI, while Gautreau was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
Dan O'Gara (2-3) picked up the win for the Wave as he pitched six innings of scoreless relief and scattered three hits. O'Gara struck out five without giving up a walk.
The teams play game two on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
