NEW ORLEANS, La. - For the second consecutive day Steve Shirley sent home the game winning run for Tulane (22-12-1, 8-2-1 C-USA) as an eighth inning sacrifice fly by the junior designated hitter gave the Green Wave a 3-2 win over Saint Louis (12-18, 3-8 C-USA) on Saturday.
Senior LHP Jared Berkowitz (8-1) recorded his third complete game of the season and tied the Tulane career record for games started with 53. Through nine innings, Berkowitz scattered eight hits struck out six and walked no one. He gave up two runs, one earned.
Tulane held a 2-1 lead until the eighth when SLU's Adam Shea singled up the middle sending in the tying run. In the bottom half of the inning, James Jurries hit a lead off double and then advanced to third on a Mickey McKee sacrifice bunt. Shirley drove in the go ahead on a sacrifice fly to right field to give the Wave a 3-2 victory.
The Green Wave's Jake Gautreau was 2-for-2 with a pair of double, while Matt Groff was 1-for-3 with one RBI.
The losing pitcher Ryan Warnecke (2-3) went eight innings and gave up three runs. He struck out three and walked one. At the plate, Shea was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
The teams wrap up the three game series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
