Tulane Baseball Gets By USF 14-12.

TAMPA, Fla. - Steve Shirley was 6-for-6, a school record, and led the Tulane (36-19-1, 19-5-1 C-USA) baseball team to a 14-12 win over South Florida (27-26, 13-12 C-USA) on Friday evening.
The Green Wave's 25 hits mark a season best as eight of nine Greenies recorded multiple hits.
Shirley's 6-for-6 performance tied a Tulane single game record in hits. The last Greenie to record six hits in a single game was Dan Wagner, who set the record against Cornell on March 25, 1986. Shirley recorded a pair of runs, two RBI and one double.
Also contributing to the offensive attack were James Jurries and Matt Groff, who went 4-for-6 with two RBI and one run. Jay Heintz and Andy Cannizaro each sent in a team high three runs.
For South Florida, Mike Eylward hit two home runs and recorded a game high four RBI. He was 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Daniel Boyd and Mike Barcley also hit home runs for the Bulls.
The winning pitcher was starting Henry Bonilla (7-3). He went 5 2/3 innings and struck out six. Bonilla gave up 10 runs nine earned. Brandon Belanger picked up his 11 save of the season, allowing no hits through a single inning of work.
Getting the loss for the Bulls was starting pitcher John Gorham (10-5). He gave up eight runs and struck out two through 3 1/3 innings.
The teams play game two on Saturday at noon.
