Baseball Falls To Notre Dame 8-4 In NCAA Regionals

STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Tulane (37-21-1) baseball team dropped the opening game of the 2000 NCAA Regional to Notre Dame (44-16) 8-4 on Friday.
A five-run eighth inning by the Irish erased a 4-3 Green Wave lead, forcing them into the loser's bracket of the tournament.
Tulane was held hitless through the third inning by Notre Dame starting pitcher Aaron Heilman until Jake Gautreau smashed hit 16 home run of the season over the right field fence. The home run is Gautreau's 37 of his career and moves him into six place on the all-time Tulane list.
Green Wave's Matt Groff was 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Gautreau was 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
The winning pitcher was Matt Buchmeier (4-2) who pitched the final three innings. He walked two and allowed no hits.
Jared Berkowitz (13-4) picked up his third straight loss for the Wave. He went 7 2/3 innings gave up six runs, walked one and struck out four.
Berkowitz and Gautreau were named TPX Louisville Slugger All-Americans Collegiate Baseball announced on Friday.
Tulane plays the loser of the Mississippi State/South Alabama game at 11:00 a.m.
