PIKESVILLE, Md. -- Tulane's Michael Kogan and Mikko Viljanen lost in today's men's doubles semifinals at the T. Rowe Price National Intercollegiate Clay Court Championships, the opening leg of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Grand Slam hosted by the Suburban Club of Baltimore County.
Kogan and Viljanen, playing in their first collegiate tennis tournament together, lost to Virginia's Brian Vahaly and Huntley Montgomery 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 in today's semifinals. The match began last night, but was postponed due to darkness with Tulane trailing 6-5 in the third set.
Unranked Kogan and Viljanen were attempting to become the first Green Wave players to reach a national final since Rolex Samuelsson reached the singles final at the '98 Rolex National Indoor Championships.
On the women's side Tulane's Anna Monhartova fell in Saturday's singles semifinals to Notre Dame's Michelle Dasso 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. A qualifier, 67th-ranked Monhartova had upset the nation's No. 17, 24 and 41 players en route to the semis.
