GREENVILLE, S.C. - - Furman scored two late goals to break open a close game, slipping past the Tulane women's soccer team 4-1 at the Stone Soccer Complex on Friday.
The loss dropped Tulane to 3-2-0, while Furman remained undefeated at 5-0-0 with the victory. The Paladins are currently ranked seventh in the Southeast Region by both the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and Soccer Buzz.
With the score tied at 1-1, and Tulane pressing its advantage in the Furman half of the field, the Paladins took advantage of a brief offensive burst to earn a penalty kick. All-American Kaye Brownlee converted the spot kick to lift Furman to a 2-1 lead in the 68th minute. Tulane again put pressure on the Furman defense, but again the Paladins held strong.
"That was a really frustrating call on the penalty kick," Tulane head coach Eliot Perkins said. "Until that point, we had good opportunities and I really thought we had the run of play at the end of the first half and in the second half.
After Furman had taken a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute, sophomore Megan Stack evened the scores for Tulane just before the halftime break. Alycia Wanat started the play with a pass to Mandy Schumacher. Schumacher beat the Paladin goalkeeper and found a streaking Stack who converted her third goal in as many games. With the goal, Stack took over the Tulane scoring lead from Colleen Lake. Stack currently has nine points on three goals and three assists, while Lake has eight points on three goals and two assists.
Furman increased its lead to 3-1 in the 76th minute when Sarah Tollick headed a loose ball into the Green Wave net. Lauren Killey closed out the scoring two minutes later, putting a long shot over goalkeeper Jaclyn Urso. Tulane nearly missed taking a 2-1 lead in the first half, when Stephanie Donaldson's free kick hit the cross bar. Stack also missed a second goal, when her shot hit the near post.
"I think our youth got to us tonight, but our experience grew tremendously," Perkins said. "We got some great individual performances and I think we played well as a team. I think we learned that we can play at that level."
Furman held a 20-14 advantage in shots, though both goalkeepers were called on to make six saves. The Paladins had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
Tulane returns to action on Saturday as the Green Wave take on Georgia State in the second round of the Umbro Kick-off Classic. Kick-off is set for 6:00 p.m. CST.
