FORT WORTH, Texas - - Asia Simons had a pair of assists to lead the Tulane women's soccer team to a 2-1 come-from-behind road win over Conference USA rival TCU at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium on Friday.
The win improves Tulane to 8-6-0 overall and 6-2-0 in Conference USA play. The six league wins sets a new school record in that category and assures the Green Wave of a winning conference record for the first time in school history. TCU dropped to 7-9-0 overall and 3-5-0 in league action.
TCU got on the board just 10 minutes into the game when freshman Laura Greenburg scored her eighth goal of the year from 20 yards out, giving the Horned Frogs a 1-0 lead.
Tulane battled back, however, to even the scores in the 34th minute. After taking a pass from Colleen Lake, Simons threaded a pass through a pair of TCU defenders to Mandy Schumacher, who scored her fifth goal of the year past TCU goalkeeper Adrianne Labovitz.
The Green Wave got the game-winner in the 72nd minute, thanks again to Simons' set-up work. A Simons pass found forward Brook Parker alone on the left side of the goal and the freshman drilled the ball into the lower right corner past Labovitz to give Tulane a 2-1 advantage.
"It is great to come out and get a good Conference USA win, especially since we didn't play as well as we would have liked," Tulane head coach Betsy Anderson said. "But anytime you play a conference opponent it is going to be a battle and we showed some resiliency in coming from behind today."
The game was statistically even, with TCU holding a slight 15-14 edge in shots and a 5-4 margin in corner kicks. Tulane freshman goalkeeper Sara Simpson posted six saves on the night, pushing her season total to 91, just five shy of setting a new school single-season record in that category. Labovitz, the TCU netminder, also recorded six saves.
Parker scored a goal for Tulane for the third straight contest and has four goals and an assist in Tulane's last three games. Lake added an assist for the third straight match.
Tulane returns to action on Sunday, as the Green Wave travel to face league rival Houston. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
