NEW ORLEANS - Tulane junior free safety Adrian Mitchell was named Defensive Player of the Week by the Louisiana Sportswriter's Association Monday after his 17-tackle performance in the Green Wave's 42-28 victory over Navy.
Mitchell, Tulane's leading tackler on the season and the top tackler at the school in eight years, made eight solo stops and broke up a pass to lead the Wave's defensive effort. His 2001 tackle total of 128 stops is the most at Tulane since Mike Staid made 133 tackles in 1993, and his 89 solo tackles rank 10th all-time. He has led Tulane in tackles in six games this year and has hit double figures in tackles eight times. The Alexandria, La. product ranks fourth in Conference USA with 11.6 tackles per game.
Mitchell is the second player to earn LSWA weekly honors this season. Mewelde Moore was named the Offensive Player of the Week after gaining 201 yards rushing versus Southern.
Grambling State's Randy Hymes earned Offensive Player of the Week honors from the LSWA for his performance in Grambling's 37-28 win over Nicholls State.
