NEW ORLEANS, La. - - The Tulane women's basketball team opens the 2001-02 season with an exhibition game against the Houston Jaguars at Fogelman Arena on Tuesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Tulane enters the 2001-02 campaign as the favorite to win the Conference USA title after a preseason vote of the league's 14 head coaches. In addition, Green Wave junior Teana McKiver was selected to the preseason All-Conference USA team.
"We are excited to finally play someone other than ourselves," head coach Lisa Stockton said. This should be a very good indication of where we are as a team. The Houston Jaguars always bring a very talented team, so this game will be a good test for us."
Last season, Tulane won a Conference USA-best 22 games while claiming its third consecutive Conference USA Tournament title. The Green Wave advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the seventh year in a row and recorded at least 20 wins for the sixth consecutive season.
The Green Wave return just two starters from last season's team, senior guard Sarah Goree and junior forward Gwen Slaughter, but will welcome back five of the team's top six scorers from a year ago. In addition, four of the team's top five rebounders return this season as well.
Following Tuesday's exhibition, Tulane will return to the court on Friday, Nov. 9, as the Green Wave play host to cross-town rival Xavier in its final exhibition. The Wave open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 16, against High Point as part of a doubleheader with the Tulane men's team.
