NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University outside hitters Britney Hurst and Anastasia Kenon were named to the 2001 All-Louisiana Volleyball Team, the Louisiana Sports Writers Association announced today.
Hurst, a junior from Baton Rouge, earned first-team all-state honors while Kenon, a redshirt freshman from San Antonio, Texas, garnered second-team all-Louisiana recognition and was named the 2001 Louisiana Freshman of the Year. The awards were the second postseason honor for both players as the pair earned second-team All-Conference USA recognition last month. Kenon was also named to the C-USA All-Freshman squad.
Hurst earned first-team honors after leading the Green Wave in kills with 4.85 per game and finishing second on the club in digs with a 3.17 average. She recorded 17 double-doubles, including five straight to start the year, and earned all-tournament honors at the NOKIA Sugar Bowl Tournament and the Kathy Trosclair Memorial Classic.
Hurst tallied double-digit kill totals in 26 of 28 matches in 2001, including a career-high 27 at Southern Mississippi. She also tallied double-digit dig statistics on 18 occasions, including 22 at Houston. One of the team's go-to players on offense, Hurst hit .300 or better 14 times, including 10 matches of .350 or better and four .400-plus contests.
Kenon, meanwhile, earned Freshman of the Year and second-team all-state honors after pacing the Green Wave in digs with 3.58 per game and service aces with 31. She also ranked second on the squad in kills with 3.80 per contest, and recorded double-doubles 17 times during the 2001 season.
Kenon, who missed all of her true freshman season with a knee injury, bounced back strong with double-digit kill totals in 23 of 28 contests, including a career-high 23 vs. cross-town rival UNO. She also recorded double-digit dig totals on 18 occasions, including a career-high 24 at Southern Miss.
The high-flying lefty hit .300 or better six times, including three .400-plus contests. Her most complete match of the season came at Saint Louis when she tallied 18 kills, 15 digs and a career-best six blocks. Kenon also received all-tournament honors at the 2001 Kathy Trosclair Memorial Classic.
Both players, along with three other starters and nine other letterwinners return to the Green Wave lineup for the 2002 season.
