Women's Tennis Falls to No. 9 Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. - - The Tulane women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to ninth-ranked Arizona State at the Whiteman Tennis Center on Monday.

The loss is Tulane's fifth straight, dropping the Wave to 2-5 so far this season. Arizona State improved to 8-1 with the win. Tulane entered the match ranked 49th in the latest ITA poll.

The Sun Devils claimed the opening doubles point by sweeping all three doubles matches. The ASU duo of McCoury and Brown, ranked 50th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, posted an 8-1 win over the Tulane team of Joyce Bergman and Julie Morris at No. 1 doubles. Tulane's Nancy Kockott and Lucy Wood dropped an 8-2 decision to ASU's 33rd-ranked Palme and Engel at the No. 2 spot. Arizona State also claimed a win at No. 3 doubles, as Megan Yeats and Cindy Sureephong were 8-4 winners over Tulane's Anneli Axsater and Olga Mikhailova.

Arizona State swept all six singles matches, posting four straight-set victories. At No. 1 singles, ASU's 35th-ranked Adria Engel turned in a 6-3, 6-3 upset win over Tulane's No. 17 Anna Monhartova. Karin Palme was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Tulane's Julie Morris at the No. 2 spot, while Megan Yates, ranked 45th by the ITA, posted a 6-3, 6-7, 6-0 win over the Wave's Joyce Bergman at No. 3 singles.

Tulane's Nancy Kockott dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to ASU' Faye DeVera at No. 4 singles, while the Wave's Anneli Axsater came up on the short end of a 6-0, 6-4 scoreline to Mhairi Brown. ASU's Cindy Sureephong claimed the No. 6 singles match with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Olga Mikhailova.
