
Women's Tennis Falls to SMU

NEW ORLEANS, La. - - The SMU women's tennis team posted wins at four singles positions to claim a 4-3 win over Tulane at the Goldring Tennis Stadium on Saturday.
Tulane got off to a dream start, claiming the opening doubles point and a win at No. 1 singles for an early 2-0 lead. However, SMU fought back to capture wins at No. 3, No.4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles to take the dual match victory.
Tulane entered the match ranked 47th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, while SMU was listed 55th.
The Green Wave earned the first point of the match with a pair of wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The Tulane tandem of Nancy Kockott and Olga Mikhailova posted an 8-4 win over the SMU duo of Kit Carson and Dee Dee Herring at the No. 2 spot, while Anna Monhartova and Anneli Axsater were 8-4 winners over SMU's team of Pruett and Swaney.
Monhartova extended the Wave's lead to 2-0 when she posted a convincing 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 25 Dee Dee Herring at the No. 1 singles position. SMU picked up its first point when Siayareh Rampally turned in a 6-1, 7-6 victory over Tulane's Lucy Wood.
The match came down to No. 3 singles, where Tulane freshman Nancy Kockott and SMU's Patricia Ubeda-Diaz needed three sets to decide the outcome. With Kockott leading 4-3 in the third set, Ubeda-Diaz broke serve to even the set at 4-4 before pulling ahead 5-4. Kockott fought back to even the set at 5-5, but Ubeda-Diaz again broke serve to claim a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 win and give SMU the dual match victory.
