Women's Tennis Proves Mightier Than Penn

NEW ORLEANS, La - - Despite losing the opening doubles point, the Tulane women's tennis team posted a 4-3 win over Penn at the Goldring Tennis Stadium on Tuesday.
The Green Wave snapped a nine-match losing streak with the victory, improving to 3-9. Penn fell to 6-6 with the loss.
Tulane claimed wins at four of six singles positions to earn its first dual-match win since Feb. 8. Joyce Bergman and Maiko Cook each posted straight-set wins. Bergman was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Penn's Shubha Srinivasan at the No. 3 spot, while Cook also turned in a 6-3, 6-3 scoreline over Rachel Shweky at the No. 6 position.
Anna Monhartova gave Tulane a point at the No. 1 singles match, rallying from a set down to record a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 decision over Sanela Kunovac. Nancy Kockott picked up Tulane's other singles victory when her opponent, Louani Bascara, was forced to retire with an injury.
Penn took an early 1-0 lead after winning two of the three doubles matches. The Penn duo of Kunovac and Shweky posted an 8-5 win over Tulane's team of Julie Morris and Joyce Bergman at No. 1 doubles, while Srinisvasan and Bascara turned in a 9-7 victory over Kockott and Olga Mikhailova at No. 2 doubles. Tulane did pick up a win in doubles, as Monhartova and Anneli Axsater cruised to a 8-2 win over Nicole Ptak and Jolene Sloat at the No. 3 spot.
Tulane returns to action on Thursday, as the Green Wave play host to Louisiana-Lafayette and American. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
