NEW ORLEANS, La. - - The Tulane women's tennis team was perfect in singles for the third consecutive match, posting a 6-1 triumph over Conference USA rival Marquette at the Goldring Tennis Stadium on Monday.
The Green Wave improved to 10-11 with the dual match victory, while Marquette drops to 6-13 with the loss. As a team, Tulane has dropped just one set in its last 18 singles matches, winning 36 of 37 in the process.
Marquette took an early lead, winning two of three doubles matches to claim the opening doubles point. But from there, it would be all Tulane, as the Green Wave posted straight-set victories on six singles courts for the second consecutive match.
Tulane's Maiko Cook made short work of Anna Pavlovic with her 6-0, 6-1 victory on court 5 to even the team score at 1-1. Anneli Axsater made it 2-1 in favor of the Green Wave moments later with her 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Marquette's Veronica Briseno at the No. 6 spot. Nancy Kockott also cruised, posting a 6-2, 6-2 win over Anabelle Espinosa at No. 4 singles to give Tulane a 3-0 cushion in the team standings.
Anna Monhartova clinched Tulane's third straight dual match victory with her 6-2, 6-3 win over Laura Garcia at the No. 1 spot. Joyce Bergman followed with a 6-0, 6-4 win against Marquette's Eva Trujillo-Herrera at No. 3 singles, before Julie Morris finished off the sweep with a 7-6, 6-3 triumph over Genevieve Charron at the No. 2 spot.
Tulane takes its three-match winning streak into this weekend's Conference USA Tournament, which will be held in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Wave will learn its seeding and first-round opponent on Tuesday.
