
Men's Tennis Opens C-USA Tourney With Win

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University opened the 2001 Conference USA Men's Tennis Tournament with a 4-1 victory over the University of Memphis on Friday afternoon at the Goldring Tennis Center.
Tulane (13-8), winners of six straight matches and ranked No. 45 in the nation, advances to the semifinals against third-seeded Charlotte Saturday at 12 noon at Goldring. Admission is free. Charlotte defeated No. 6 UAB, 4-2, on Friday.
The Wave opened the match by earning the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. The No. 8-ranked tandem of freshman Michael Kogan (Kfar Saba, Israel) and senior Mikko Viljanen (Vantaa, Finland) rolled to an 8-3 win at the top flight, while sophomores Victor Romero (Atizapan, Mexico) and Jorge Lievano (Bucaramanga, Colombia) wrapped up the point with an 8-4 win at No. 3.
In singles action, Kogan, ranked No. 29, made short work of his opponent at No. 1, winning 6-1, 6-1, to give Tulane a 2-0 advantage.
Memphis answered, however, with Michael Chamberlain topping senior Derya Rose (Greenwich, Conn.), 6-3, 6-1, at No. 5, making it 2-1.
The Green Wave wrapped up the win with triumphs at No. 2 and No. 6. After the 84th ranked Romero fell behind early in his match at No. 2, he rallied and managed a 7-6, 6-3 win. Sophomore Mattias Westerberg (Lulea, Sweden) then clinched the victory by winning 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.
